Let’s talk about place value, the decimal system, positional value of a digit, positional representation of a digit, and the significance of digit position. Wow! When I first started math, it wasn’t explained to me that the position of the digit was important. It had not broken down in a way that helped me to see the weight that said number carried. So one of my goals is to break down the number and show it’s position and why.
I presented my groups with this game of 1-10 trade-off. They are to count out ten and trade them with me for a whole. This is a fun game to help introduce the Tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. place. In this game, they are gaining the concept that every time you count to ten, we are now adding a digit.
Currently, we are working on learning the tens place.
- Base Ten Blocks ( units and ten rods)
- Small Bowls
How to play:
Working in groups of 3
- Grab an undetermined amount of unit blocks and hand them to each student.
- Place the ten rods in the middle between you and them.
- They are to count out ten unit blocks and slide them to you for and even trade of a ten rod. Continue this until they have traded to their last ten.
- They are to count their ten rods by tens and then add in their units (ex. 10,20,30,31,32,33,34,35)
To make this a game, I made it a race to see who could finish counting their units and trading them for their ten rods the fastest. During this time is when they begin to grasp the concept of the trade-off. I would build upon it for the first one to trade and tell me how many ten rods they had and units was the winner of the round. They get to play three rounds and then move on.
Now that I have presented this game, I set up a table for independent play to increase the concept of this skill.
